ARCHIVE'S WORLD CUP 2010 DAY 1

Today's scores:

South Africa 1 Mexico 1
Uruguay 0 France 0

Unexpected results in both matches of the first day - France must be disappointed particularly given that Uruguay were down to ten men for the last eleven minutes. The first game of the tournament was scored by host team, South Africa.

This is two times in about a week that I've seen France (counting that last friendly with China) and both times they've looked simply awful. I'd like to see them not even make it out of the group.

Chris - they seemed to have no energy - and for such a usually strong team they seemed weak. There were one or two moments of beautiful football but for the most part they were France-lite. I still think they'll get through the group stage, though.

Yeah, they'll probably advance. I don't have to like it, though! Heh.

South Africa did outplay Mexico in the second half, but Mexico was ROBBED of that "offside" goal in the first. The call may have been an innocent mistake, but under the circumstances it was damned suspicious.

In that second game, Uruguay looked tenacious and France seemed flat. The next matches in this group should be very interesting.

I didn't see that play as offsides at all, frankly. The keeper came off his line, the ball got behind him and passed back in to the guy set to score. At that point the only defender if front of the goal scorer was the guy on the line, and there needs to be two defenders (which usually includes the GK, but this time didn't) either even or between the attacker and the goal. I thought it was a good call. Here's a link that discusses it better.

I've watched replays and read the rule, and still think the call was blown. At the time the ball was kicked, both the keeper and defender were between Vela and the goal.

The goalkeeper ran out leaving Vela in an offside position. If the goalkeeper had acted like a goalkeeper than it would have been a goal. I think it was the correct call - off-side.

It was damn close, either way.

I THINK THE OFF-SIDE CALL WAS CORRECT, BUT I ALSO THINK SOUTH AFRICA WAS ROBBED OF A PENALTY. THE GAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN 2-1 SOUTH AFRICA.

AS FOR FRANCE, IT LOOKED AS IF THEY WERE ON CRUISE CONTROL. THEY ALL HATE EACH OTHER SO MUCH THEY CAN'T SEEM TO PLAY TOGETHER.

ROLL ON ENGLAND VS. USA . . .
