I read both books over four days. Like you said, there isn't any fat in EL's books. What astounded me when I finished Hombre and Valdez was (a) that I'd read the books so far but (b) how much I realized was in those slim volumes. EL chooses just the right words and helps you, the reader, fill in the gaps. Having just finished the 771-page tome, Drood, it's a good example of the other type of writing: putting it ALL on the page. It's a testament to EL's prowess that Hombre can last in your brain after such a short reading time.Scott D.
