FRIDAY'S FORGOTTEN BOOKS

The Shooters
Leon Claire Metz
Berkley

Written by past president of the Western Writers of America, Leon C. Metz this book is set out in twenty nine chapters, each detailing the life of an infamous western gunfighter.

As the author points out the GUNFIGHTER, as we know him, is largely a myth created by Hollywood. But as can be seen from this book the truth is often better than the fiction.

The book covers all the well know western figures - Billy the Kid, Earp, Pat Garrett, the James Boys but where the book really scores is in its chapters on lesser known historical figures.

This book is well worth digging around for and will be well thumbed as you dip in and out and read these bite sized slices of history.

I am getting ready to purchase Eugene Cunningham's Triggernometry. Maybe I will add The Shooters to the order. Another similar (and good one) book is Inventing Wyatt Earp: His Life and Many Legends by Allen Barra.

This sounds like a good read/reference book so I've bought a copy. I'll let you know what I think.

I'm going to look for a copy of this. It would be a great reference work. Have you seen James Reasoner's "Draw," about the great gunfights?
