JAMES BOND THE LATEST HOT NEWS

First it was on hold while the financial problems surrounding MGM were sorted out, but now the official word is that the new Bond movie has been scrapped. The filming of Bond 23 was put on hold indefinitely in April, but there are now rumours that the movie has been scrapped altogether.

MGM studios, who were co-funding the Daniel Craig film, have suffered from well-documented problems in the past year, and are believed to have axed the £132 million blockbuster.

A source told The Mirror: "Members of the production crew have been told the Bond film has been canned.

“There is a lot of bad feeling as a lot of time, money and hard work has already gone into this.”

Director Sam Mendes and writer Peter Morgan were already attached to the project, but have now been set free to work on other projects.

It is my guess that this will mean Daniel Craig doesn't do another Bond movie - this is a similar situation to what happened between Licence to Kill and Goldeneye, though the reasons are different. After Licence to Kill the franchise was rested for several years and when it returned Timothy Dalton was replaced by Pierce Brosnan. If the series does rest for more than a couple of years then it is unlikely Craig will return - mind you that's no bad thing to my mind - I've never been a fan of Daniel Craig as Bond - serious miscasting in my opinion - and the current producers don't seem to know what to do with the series.

Hmmm. Interesting. Re Daniel Craig: Don't tell me you're one of the fans that didn't like the idea of a blonde Bond. I liked Daniel Craig as Bond in Casino Royale. It is my favorite non-Sean Connery Bond film. Without a doubt. The film has an intensity that none of the other post-Connery movies had. However, I did not care for the Daniel Craig followup - whatever it was called. Seems the "getting back to basics" of CR was not something the producers could do two times in a row. So, I was not anticipating much with the third film. But, now we'll never know.

Frank - I had no problem with a blonde bond - I just didn't like Craig's portrayal at all - it was great to see a toughen up of the series with CR but Craig's Bond was too much thug and no style. That line about the Vodka drink - do you think I give a give a damn. Sums up my feeling for the film and QOS was even worse. My take on CR the movie will be more detailed when I get to it as part of the movie series reviews.

Did you ever see Layer Cake? I thought it was pretty solid, and Craig was terrific in it. I saw it when it was first released, before there was any talk of him playing Bond. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the film that brought him to the attention of the Bond producers.

Agree - Layer Cake is excellent. I just can't see him as Bond. He looks more like Robert Shaw From Russia with Love.

For what it's worth, and despite how much I've enjoyed most of the Bond movies, I think everything after "Thunderball" was a retread of what had come before. With the early films they didn't know quite what they had and just went full throttle, but in the later years, can we honestly say the films aren't so aware of how cool they are, or are supposed to be, that it didn't really contribute anything other than a few hours' fun?

The best Bond movies are the ones in my head when I read a Fleming book. :)

Brian - I partly agree with what you are saying though I do think Timothy Dalton caught the character. BUt I like both the novels and the films and these days think of them very much as seperate entities - the Bond of the novels and the Bond of the films are two seperate characters to my mind. So even though none of the movies have really captured Bond it doesn't matter because the books are still there. I'm one of the few that think Daniel Craig's Casino Royal was a load of crap and don't get me started on QOS. But I do have a lot of time for many of the Moore films as well as the Connery efforts. OHMSS was also a fine movie as was Goldeneye There are of course hordes of 007 movie fans who have never read Fleming and I think that's who the movies are truly aimed at.
