Looks to me like a weak attempt to ape the Stephen Jones and Kim Newman anthology of choices and accompanying 1-page essays by the choosers, HORROR: THE 100 BEST BOOKS. That came out some years back, and there's been a sequel, of the next hundred. Likewise, sf and fantasy have gotten their own similar volumes...the fantasy volume edited by Michael Moorcock and James Cawthorne.
