I think Daniel Craig is making an excellent job of taking Bond away from the Cold War and breathing new, 21st century life into him, so I'll give credit where it's due...
A lot of people agree with you - Casino Royale's record box office and huge critical success. I just can't dig Craig as Bond and I'm not sure of the harder direction. Think I want Q and Moneypenny with my 007. Ahh well, I may feel different after seeing QOS
The best Bond? Connery, obviously - he was there first and established the character.
Though the actor who impressed me was George Lazenby - he was the book Bond - he resembled the character on the early covers. Probably the best movie as well with On Her Majesty's Secret Service - runs close with Goldfinger and From Russia With Love - three Bond movies that stuck close to the book.
