The western trail by Ralph Compton

Ralph Comptom
SMP BOOKS
£3.99

The second in the excellent Trail Drive Series again features the characters of Benton McCaleb and the motley band of followers he gathered around him in the previous novel. This time the author decides to concentrate on a land war in which McCaleb and his band must fend of a ruthless cattle baron and his hired killers in order to keep the land they want to call home.

A highlight of the previous book was when McCaleb met famed real life gunfighter Clay Alison. This time we meet Buffalo Bill Cody and he is so well realised that he adds a great deal to an already excellent western.

Once again the central relationship between McCaleb and Rebecca is featured heavily and provides drama and humour in equal measure. There are also some great character moments with the supporting cast. Goose, who stole the show last novel, is once again a character that is a joy to read and comes bouncing fully realised from the page. If anything he's even more of a delight and is now a mean, poker playing, hard drinking Apache who seems to have mastered English. At first I wasn't sure about this touch but then, I suppose, after spending so long with his new friends he would have learned the lingo.

The Western Trail is every bit as good as the previous book and I've now run out of books in the trail drive series. I've read the first three and am eager to get more. I guess it's off to Ebay to search for the rest of the series.

Believe me, they're that good.
