Sounds of the Old West

It was actually my first book published - back in 2009 I took the step from amatuer to professional writer when Robert Hale published my novel,  Tarnished Star as part of their Black Horse Westerns series. The hardcover did really well, remaining their fastes selling title, selling out its first print run on pre-orders alone. Fast forward to the 2018 and the book, now retitled LawMaster has been optioned for a film (although it seems stuck in development hell) and is now available as an audiobook read by the talented Marcus Litch. The reader does a great job in bringing the title to life.

All Sheriff Cole Masters wants is to raise a family with the woman he loves. But upholding the law in an era when gunfire speaks louder than words can be a risky business. Cole makes an arrest for the brutal murder of a saloon girl but the killer is the son of a wealthy rancher and it’s clear the old man will do anything to see his son set free. Soon the peace of the small town is shattered with deadly force and Cole finds himself a lawman on the run for murder. The rancher wants Masters dead and the two deadly gunmen on his tail are sure they can do it. Soon blood will run as Cole Masters attempts to reclaim his tarnished star.

About the author: Gary Dobbs is the man behind the Jack Martin pen-name and had a string of popular westerns to his name. He also writes on criminal and military history. His debut western, The Tarnished Star (now known as LawMaster) remains the fastest selling Black Horse Western ever. Adventure fiction, and particularly westerns, holds a special place in the author's heart, and he intends to be produce western fiction for as long as there are readers who want it.

The book can be found at Audible  -

I am of course immensely fond of this book - it started me on the writer's life of late nights at the keyboard, huge coffee consumption and perpetual poverty.

Age of Kill Review

'He used to be in Eastenders!' my partner pointed to Martin Kemp as she mouthed another of those new giant sized M&M's (the blue ones are the best, by the way).

I nodded, thinking I'm old enough to remember him when he was in that 1980's new romantic band, Spandau Ballet.

The lyrics of their 1983 single which got to No 2 in the hit parade popped into my head - I used to sing it in the schoolyard, all the while flicking my, stiff with too much Falcon hairspray for men, quiff to attract the girls.

Gold
Always believe in your soul
You've got the power to know
You're indestructible
Always believe in, because you are
Gold

Now my quiff's gone, replaced by a greying mop and Martin Kemp's thrown away his too tight trousers for the  designer jeans and T-shirts of Sam Burke, ex Black OPs sniper in Neil Jones's new thriller, Age of Kill. The blurb tells us that this is Taken meets 24 and there is something in that description. Martin Kemp's character find himself forced into a world of madness when his daughter is taken hostage by a mysterious terrorist. Out of options and with no one to turn to, Blake is forced to carry out the terrorist's evil bidding and must assassinate six seemingly random targets within six hours.  That's one a hour, maths fans.

Director, Neil Jones might have shot this film with a lens dipped in amphetamine such is the speed in which we are hurtled from one incredible set piece to another. Kemp is absolutely brilliant and certainly looks the part and he is supported by a set of quality British actors such as Phil Davies and Dexter Fletcher. One actor deserves special mention and he is Nick Moran who  plays the slimy leader of a far right political group with a performance very much based on Nick Griffin.

There are times when the low budget shows through but overall this is an adrenaline rush of a movie. Available now on DVD and I say go get it.

Deranged

Deranged is a Spanish movie which was written by Oscar Carrion and directed by Neil Jones, whom Archive readers  know as the man who is working on the early stages of bringing my novel, The Tarnished Star to the screen as the all action western LawMaster. Can't wait for that to happen.

Neil's been a busy man and directly following shooting on the horror movie, The Reverend he was off to Spain to shoot Deranged. He's back in good old Blighty now and about to start shooting another movie. I’ve blagged a part in this so expect news when I’m able to post it. I’m looking forward to this and very much enjoyed being a part of Neil’s previous indie horror, The Reverend – there’s a little news on that below.

Deranged centers on four girls who go on a bachelorette party weekend to a country house, in rural Spain, and in grand horror movie tradition things start to go wrong...very wrong...totally bloody wrong...or in youthspeak, like totally fucked up wrong, dude.

Deranged stars Craig Fairbrass, Marcia Do Vales, Natalia Celino, Victoria Broom, Tabby Quitman and Pablo Olewski.

Look out for The Reverend

I’m looking forward to this movie – director Neil Jones tell us – “We open theatrically in the UK on October 14th, our big launch will be at the British Horror Film Festival at the Empire in Leicester Square, I’m really excited for the release date, I really believe The Reverend brings something fresh to the genre and I believe the novel will be released at a similar time. We’re working on a US release date now as soon as we have that I’ll let you know! For tickets for horror festival please visit www.filmfestivalguild.com.”

As I say I’m eager to see this one – and not only because Neil’s a good friend and I’m in the movie and get seriously gored up, but also because when I read the script I was bowled over – seriously, you wouldn’t think it was possible for someone to come up with an original slant on the vampire mythos but Neil has done just this, describing the film in an interview HERE as, Death Wish with bites.

The cast here are awesome – not only do we have the great Rutger Hauer but also Bafta winning, Stuart Brennan and a certain Doug (Pinhead) Bradley. Of course the fact that a certain Gary Dobbs otherwise known as Jack Martin and Vincent Stark also appears briefly will cut no ice with you lot, but believe me my involvement with the film was great fun and gruesomely gory.

Neil Jones Interview

(Re) Search my trash is talking to director, Neil Jones and the interview will be of interest because Neil is the man who will direct the movie based on my novel Tarnished Star. The film gets a mention in the interview, with Neil namechecking it amongst his future projects - "As already said I’m not really a horror guy only. My favourite genre is probably the Western, I’m currently working with best selling Western author Jack Martin and we’re adapting his novel The Tarnished Star for the big screen, it’s still early days but keep an eye out for LawMaster (adapted title)."

Risen - all new trailer

Archive readers will know that boxing biopic, Risen is directed by Neil Jones, the man who will bring my novel, Tarnished Star to the screen as LawMaster - all the more reason to check out this excellent movie. I'm actually in this thing - a small part, a couple of lines. Neil is just about to start work on his new movie, The Reverend - I've seen the script and believe me it offers a new take on the vampire mythos. The Archive will bring you more news soon and hopefully some on set pics.

But for now - Risen.
