It's sad news but D C Thomson's Easy Read series of short novels have been axed after only a few short months - the line was originally intended to replace the My Weekly Pocket Novel series but ended up running alongside them. However we have just learned that after a high level of returns to the publisher the series is now officially over.
I am deeply saddened by this, particularly as the imprint had shown interest in publishing a print edition of my popular eBook Granny Smith Investigates. Maggie Steed, the commissioning editor, was very taken with the character and I was working on a rewrite to bring the book up to the required length for the Easy Reads imprint.
The official word from D C Thomson is - "The Easy Reads have been suspended while we evaluate sales."
Ahh well things are not easy for the professional writer in the current market, and are unlikely to improve for the foreseeable future.
Publisher D C Thomson are very much in the news at the moment - what with the last ever Dandy appearing this week and now this sad news. Incidentally the first online Dandy (issue 0) is now available for free HERE, but although the on-line version is being called a new start for the iconic title it still feels like a funeral.
