'We want to put the viewer in the driving seat,' CHIPS cameraman Robert Sparks told TV Guide in 1979. It was his job to build special motorcycles that carried advanced camera equipment - this gave the viewer the experience of actually seeing what the driver would see.
Many of the stunts in the show were filmed around the freeways of Los Angeles which caused a logistical nightmare for the program makers.
The show ran for six seasons though Estrada went on strike and didn't appear in seven episodes of season five. And in season six Larry Wilcox walked out after a disagreement with Estrada and he was replaced by Tom Reilly.
By then though the writing was on the wall and CHIPS fizzled out. There is however a big screen movie currently in development.
