The Dam Busters (1955) look absolutely superb on Blu-Ray - when viewed through a large screen TV you're probably getting a better experience than those who saw the film in the cinema in the first place. When I was a kid the film was constantly on TV but it seems to have fallen out of favour in these politically correct times - the problem is that Air Commander Guy Gibson, the man who led the mission that forms the basis for this film, had a pet dog, a black Labrador, named Nigger and the word is used as a code word in this film. It was not as if Gibson was racist but these were different times.
The cuts of the film that do show up on TV have the offending word removed or bleeped out but thankfully the cut here is complete. The full screen transfer is crystal sharp and even if this does show up some of the model work it is stunning to watch. The sound also is very punchy but delivered in mono only.
The disc also contains a great documentary that features interviews with surviving crew members who took part in the mission. All in all this is a great release and more than makes up for the previous poor DVD release.
