I love his rendition, and yes, it is heart wrenching.
It made me forget the original and I thought NIN's version was perfection.
Trent's angst just shaves it for me, but both are classic versions although of course 'crown of thorns' isn't quite as good a line as 'crown of shit'.
To me it's not so much the song, even if it is great but when you listen it's as if you're listening to Cash's entire life. It's brutal, soul deep.
The first time I saw the video was shortly after June died, which made it all the more heavy to watch.
