The Goodnight Trail

This book, the first in the successful Trail Drive series that spawned a host of sequels and was continued after the author's death by authors such as David Robins and Joseph West.
This though was his first novel and it immediately made the critics sit up an take notice. The story is so detailed that its almost like being on a trail drive but despite the authentic setting and the epic nature of the story what really stands out is the truly likable main characters and the readers share every emotion as they blaze new trails across the American West.
A true modern classic - historically accurate and extremely enjoyable at the same time. Not any easy balance to reach...

I agree, it's the first of his books I read and I was immediately taken by the feel of authenticity on every page. The female characters came across well too. I've got the next two in the series but still have to read them; something to look forward to.
