This one certainly looks like it is going to be different - a Sherlock Holmes for modern times and Warner Brothers are pinning their hopes on the fact that this could turn into a lucrative franchise. Already there is talk of a sequel with none less than Brad Pitt playing the evil Moriarty to Downey's Sherlock Holmes.
Director, Guy Ritchie certainly needs a hit after a string of flops - the director's last truly great film being 2000's Snatch.
The cast, at least, are dynamite - Robert Downey as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. And from the trailers it certainly looks like an action packed ride but the film needs to please both casual fans and Holmes devotees. It will be interesting to see how the hardcore Sherlockians will react if the rumors that there is a gay thing going on between Holmes and Watson are true.
"We're trying to be as authentic as we can to the original Sherlock Holmes. We've tried to include a bit more Conan Doyle in it." Robert Downey Jnr.
It's out Christmas Day so let's hope it proves to be a cracker rather than a turkey.
