TV COPS WEEKEND - Guest, Howard Hopkins

I have to admit, I was never a big cop show fan as a kid. In fact, I can probably count on one hand the shows I did watch. I liked Hawaii Five-O, Dragnet; saw a few episodes of The Rookies and maybe a TJ Hooker and CHIPs or two. But one show I did watch religiously was Adam-12

Adam-12 hit the air in September of 1968 and ran till August of 1975 on the NBC network. The show was produced by Dragnet’s Jack Webb’s Mark VII Limited, which was also responsible for the firefighter show Emergency. In fact, the show’s lead Officers, Reed and Malloy, originally appeared on Dragnet, so it was sort of a spin-off. Episodes were based on true life cases and names were, of course, changed to protect the innocent.

The episodes focused much on Reed and Malloy’s partnership and Malloy’s seasoning of the rookie Reed. Martin Milner played Officer Peter Malloy while Kent McCord played Officer James Reed. Webb wrote a number of episodes and the show was Stephen J. Cannell’s first permanent job. Comedian Ozzie Nelson directed a number of episodes as well.

Adam-12 officers drove a typical Black & White squad car and wound up influencing aspects of the real life LAPD, along with insinuating its catch phrases into the American lexicon. “One-Adam-12, One-Adam-12, see the man on the corner of North and Vine…” & “One-Adam-12, Roger” were on the lips of many a young boy during the show’s run. Episodes were well-written and action-packed, as well as character-driven in a half-hour format. Four seasons are available on DVD with the fifth coming in August and well worth picking up.
