RAGE OF THE MOUNTAIN MAN
Rage of the Mountain Man
William W. Johnson
Pinnacle £5.99
This is actually the thirteenth book in the bestselling Mountain Man series from William W. Johnson - so successful is the series that it has been continued since the author's death in 2004. This volume from 1994 though is very much William W. Johnson.
The book may come in the middle of the series but each book can be read without any knowledge of the others, but regular readers will enjoy a better level of character development. However this is only the third title I've read in the series and I didn't feel I suffered from not knowing the entire series. I do though intend to get to know the world of the Mountain Man much better and I have several more volumes in my TBR pile.
The plot of this one sees Smoke Jensen on a trip to Boston with his lovely wife. However he soon comes across old enemies as well as having to fend off more familiar foes who don't want to see him return to the Sugarloaf. Smoke fights off danger in several thrilling scenes before his wife is kidnapped and the plot set up for the big showdown.
Rage of the Mountain Man is a thrilling adventure novel that will delight not only western fans but anyone who fancies a expertly written piece of escapist fiction. Having Smoke operate outside his usual environment gives the story a sense of fun and wonder and I was eating the pages up at speed.
A great novel...a tightly constructed story. William W. Johnson's Mountain Man series is a powerhouse slice of western fiction.

I'm a fan of Johnstone's western characters, having read all of them to date. They're being carried on admirably by new writers.
