Still Battling

Formerly known as Commando War Stories in Pictures, Commando Comics were launched in 1961 and are still going strong. In fact they have bucked the trend of the comic book market and are going stronger than ever. Originally there were two titles a month but that was quickly increased to four a month. And in 1986 it went to eight a month.

The present schedule are eight books a month - four new titles and four reprints from their vast archive.

The comics primarily draw their themes and backdrops from the various world war II incident but these days many other conflicts are covered and from time to time the comic even features westerns. Commando comics are noted for their distinctive 7 x 5 1/2 inch, 68 page format that became a standard for these kinds of stories. It has remained more popular than many other British war comics, and some would say British comics in general, despite its simplistic stories and simply sketched black and white artwork, with only the cover image in full colour.

In 2005 Carlton Books released a hard back collection of 12 classic stories, chosen by the editor, George Low. The book was so successful that several other themed volumes followed with the latest being set around D-Day landings.

As was usual with British comics neither the artist nor writer were credited though these days both are listed inside a hand grenade icon on the title page.

Our western writing and publishing friend David Whitehead has plenty to tell about Commando comics at his www.benbridges.co.uk site.

I believe he has the complete set -- more than 4000 of them!

Plus he has been a Commando scriptwriter for 14 years, so he speaks with authority, you might say.

Chap - yeah I was going to write to David about his Commando stuff - I should have listed him in the body of the post, what with the BHW connection. Think I've an interview idea coming on.

I've heaps of these, and the other popular war comics that are no longer being published, such as War Picture Library and Battle Picture Library. My favourite was Air Ace.
