True West and yummy vinegar pie!

The latest issue of True West (April cover date) is another of their annual western travel issue and it's packed full of interesting features. This month I found an article on what folk ate in the Old West to be particularly interesting - Vinegar Pie was a popular treat because despite how it sounds it apparently tasted something like Lemon and of course Vinegar was easier to come by than lemons in the days of old.

Vinegar Pie
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup of water
half cup of vinegar
half cup flour
quarter cup of Water
Pie Shell

Combine the sugar, water and vinegar and bring to a boil. Add the butter and stir until it melts. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 15 minutes. Mix the flour and quarter cup of water and beat until the mixture is smooth. Add the sugar slurry and stir again.

Pour into a pan with the pie shell and bake for ten minutes at medium heat.

Enjoy

The magazine has also started a western social networking site and Gary Dobbs/Jack Martin is a member.

I've never heard of Vinegar pie. Man it sounds awful. But I do love Lemon pie. I might have to try this.

Don't knock what you haven't tried I'm told but I may have to pass on Vinegar Pie.

David - I'm waiting for Anon's report before I get the pan out.

There is a country song about the girls getting prettier at closing time when they all begain to look like movie stars. Maybe after the pioneers had plodded along for weeks behind wagon and oxen the same can be said for any dessert.

In my case I must not have been deprived of dessert for a long enough time as this recipe was the culinary equivalent of "god awful."

I noticed other vinegar pie recipes only called for 1-3 tablespoons of vinegar while this one was 1/2 cup. It was over whelming!

Vinegar is suppose to surpress your appetite and lower cholesterol. I'm not sure about the latter but it sure killed my appetite.

It would have been cheaper and quicker to eat the pie crust with one hand and swig straight from the bottle of vinegar with the other.

Yuck!
