WILD WEST ROUND-UP

Many of the BHW writers will be guest blogging on The Archive for the month long series of posts leading up to Wild West Monday III. We are delighted to announce that BHW head honcho, Mr. John Hale will also be talking to the Archive.

Leaders at the Wind River Reservation have started a language immersion school to teach pre-kindergarten pupils Arapaho. It is hoped The Arapaho Language Lodge will reverse a steady decline in the native language.

UK readers who fancy a wild west day out this coming bank holiday - sun and mon - can visit Margam Park near Port Talbot, Wales where the Wyoming Wild Bunch will be staging a series of western reconstructions. High on the bill is the GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL.

Sounds like a great line up of interviews. Cool.

Jo - course May is also the month that a certain female western writer makes her BHW debut and we're all looking forward to that.

Charles - Glad you'll be here to join in the fun. Wild West Monday is coming and it's great to have Arkansas Slim with us.

Mr Hale, BHWs' venerable publisher, is to talk to the Archive . . . I can think of no surer sign of the esteem in which Gary is now held. He has "arrived" before his first book!

This is a surprising change of heart by Mr Hale, who is apparently relaxing a working lifetime's rule to give the interview to this blog. For those who don't know, it perhaps needs to be explained that past approaches have always been rejected.

The well-established online magazine Black Horse Extra, which has been publicizing Mr Hale's books for a number of years, had its own overtures to Mr Hale rejected by his spokesperson in October 2006 in these words:

"I have finally managed to discuss with Mr Hale your suggestion of interviewing him with the aim of running a website article. Unfortunately he has always declined any such publicity on a personal level, and will thus have to decline your kind offer."

keith - although Mr Hale is very busy he did answer a series of questions I sent to him. I am planning on running this alongside updates on BHW's that I have recieved from many of the BHW writers, including yourself, early in May as part of the month of BHW posts leading up to the next Wild West Monday which will be June 1st as you know. And of course Black Horse Extra which you preside over is running a feature on Jack Martin so I will be linking to that when it goes live.

More than the other two Wild West Monday's I want this to be a group effort and not only by BHW writers but western writers in general and fans and readers alike. For instance Steve of the wonderful Wild West Review is doing something for us - as is Laurie Powers. So May's Archive postings should be very entertaining and with less spelling errors than is usual. LOL.

Saddle up folks and get ready for Wild West Monday III

Indeed, Gary has very generously supplied what will be the lead article in the next Black Horse Extra. There will be no Mr Hale, but I hope readers will be able to see the story of Gary's fascinating life and successes as a most handsome "consolation prize".

The next quarterly edition of the the Extra (June-August) will go live mid-May. Although production and costs fall largely on one set of shoulders, its appearance so far has always been regular and reliable. And, thanks to sterling support from people like David Whitehead, Paddy Gallagher, Keith Hetherington and the late Chris Kenworthy, I believe the Extra has been as entertaining and informative as is possible for what is not an "official" publisher's site. I do know it sells books!

I'll be absent for the first week of the new Wild West Monday campaign -- I'm taking a short break from all writing/business work -- but as before I'll be giving full support.

As Gary says, more than ever WW Monday must be a united, group effort. It can only happen if larger numbers show willing to pitch in as advocates for the Western. At the very least, let's see as many emails to bookshop chains and libraries as we see daily pageloads for the Archive!

Keith - and while you're here check out the Archive's live feed - your online novel is being read quite often. So you are adding to those page loads

Good news on the Arapaho immersion! I'm always saddened by the loss of cultural treasures like language. In a similar vein, I was trying to learn Welsh via book & tape some years ago, before realizing that I REALLY need a human teacher I can ask questions to. Regardless, prynhawn dda!

LANA - Native American culture is fascinating. I've been reading on the subject for years - it would be a great loss for all this ancient wisdom to vanish.

I too managed to secure a line from Mr Hale for the May promo on my blog. Either he's softening or he thinks Gary and I are in cahoots!

Yeah Jo - I think we are in cahoots - pity we couldn't get a pic to go with your upcoming Archive feature (private joke there folks!)
