WILD WESTERN NEWS

A few years ago Robert Hale LTD who run the popular Black Horse Western imprint cut back from publishing ten westerns a month to only six - it seems the days were numbered for our favourite escapist genre. However the last year has seen a pick up in interest in oaters and Hale have decided that from July this year they will be publishing another western a month which takes the total up to seven books a month, eighty four new books a year.

What is remarkable is that given the current economic downturn the western genre is starting to thrive again - this must be in part due to all the blogs, including The Archive, publicising the genre and initiatives such as Wild West Monday.

Please support the next Wild West Monday -create the demand.

Indeed and Hale also mentioned in its latest newsletter than book sales are outperforming the wider economy.

The probably the first good news I've heard about the book industry in quite some time. Let's hope it continues to grow.

Looking forward to the next Wild West Monday!

Romance and Westerns appear to be growing-perhaps because they take the reader out of the current situation.

It is indeed excellent news. And quite unannounced, although Hale had (as The Little Man notes here) mentioned in its latest newsletter that book sales were up generally despite the recession. I stumbled across the boosted BHW schedule when I requested and update of forthcoming listings from the company's publicity department. I immediately passed the tidbit on to Archavist, who has done his grand and usual prompt job of spreading the word. Pleased to see everyone happy!

Now if the revival could really take hold and a UK publisher could bring out inexpensive paperback westerns... Well, I can dream, I guess!
