Spider-man 4 axed by Sony

Sony have announced that they are dropping plans for Spider-man 4 and going back to basics for a reboot of the franchise - Sony is going forward without “Spider-Man” director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire, which is no surprise. Raimi spent most of the past year apologizing for “Spider-Man 3,” which critics and fans alike had greeted with widespread disappointment.

Raimi had promised “Spider-Man 4” would have a better script that would emphasize the characters and not try to shoehorn too many supervillains into the mix. Unfortunately, the script Sony had in hand didn’t meet Raimi’s expectations. The word from Deadline Hollywood’s Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming was that Raimi “hated it.”

So, he walked away for that most Hollywood of reasons — “creative differences” — and Sony is rebooting with a new director and a new cast.

I'm getting sort of tired of the term "reboot" that's being tossed around in Hollywood. I can see the new Star Trek as a reboot but the Spiderman movies are just too recent for that. I didn't care that much for Spiderman 3, though, and I don't like the huge multi villain pieces.

After Ironman, Spidey seems lame. I didn't care for 2 or the above mentioned 3.

With so many fantastic SF, fantasy, and super-heroic properties that have never been done, it's a shame Hollywood keeps churning out stories about the same old characters.

Perhaps three Spidermen were enough for the world. Each was less special than the one before it.
