ORLANDO -- From now on, any cigarette sold in the state must meet so-called "fire safe" standards, which will stop cigarettes from burning and hopefully prevent fires.
Safety officials are all happy about it, but not all smokers are on board.
"The flavor got less and less and less," said Cecilia, a smoker and employee at Pipe Dreams tobacco shop. "Whatever they saturate it with is terrible."
The cigarettes are marked with "FSC" for Fire Standards Compliant.
It means they're made with a special cigarette paper that will cause it to go out on its own if someone stops puffing.
Manufacturers at Dosal Tobacco said no changes are being made that will affect the flavor or taste of their cigarettes. The paper is different and that's to comply with the new law.
However, smokers like Cecilia notice a difference.
"It tastes like basically the cigarettes that are left over from the factory that are all left on the floor," Cecilia said.
There is no surprise about what fire officials think. Cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths across the country.
They hope the new cigarette paper can help bring those numbers down.
But there could also be another benefit.
Cecilia said having to light and re-light the new cigarettes may be enough to make her quit.
The new standards are already in place in most of the country. Only Wyoming has not made the cigarette law mandatory.

FSC cigarettes are horrible and extremely dangerous. When I first heard about them on TV I thought they were a pretty cool idea because I'm all for fire prevention. I was wrong.
The "fire safe" cigs are much more a fire hazard. The lit end falls out often and when you re-light they often spark (flame up). I read where one lady burnt her bangs and forehead because of that and thousands have burnt carpets, furniture, and clothes and/or have gotten sick (including myself). The papers aren't actually thicker, it's more paper stuck together with carpet glue. A lot of people have said they almost wrecked their cars when the cherry falls on their lap while driving. This is where it really affects nonsmokers because people will be crashing into them too! There is a petition to Repeal Fire Safe Cigarette Laws. Read the signatures, it is really scary.
After many years of smoking factory cigs hubby and I are smoking (vaping) e-cigs now and stuffing our own also. Please see My Smokin' Blog for legal alternatives. People do know this law is putting the ball back in the Mafia's court, right? Just like prohibition.
Wishing all smokers the best in quitting or finding an alternative, or two. Happy New Year!
The anti-smoking legislation's gone nuts worldwide. I'm going to continue to enjoy my pipe and if they try and tell me otherwise well they can piss off.
Nothin' wrong with a pipe! In my opinion, the only ones who should smoke FSC cigarettes are the ones who passed the law. Oh crap, I don't even want them to smoke them!
I agree Carrie. Plus if you have a cigarette that is going out you are constantly lighting it, which increase the use of matches and lighters that could potentially start a fire.
People who don't want to smoke FSC cigarettes there is a solution. nonfsccigarette.com is a company out of Mexico that mail all major brands of non-FSC cigarettes to your doorstep. We are able to do this because producers like Phillip Morris and R.J. Reynolds have plants here in Mexcio that produce non-FSC cigarettes. If you are still interested in smoking but hate FSC cigarettes, please give nonfsccigarette.com a try.
